New Years’ Eve and Day is a festive time celebrated worldwide with friends, family, and fireworks. On New Year’s Eve, people love: eating delicious food. Some New Years’ Eve traditions symbolize good luck, health, and fortune.
Beans: They are green and symbolize coins = wealth. Traditionally, in the American South, beans are combined with rice and bacon for a lucky New Year’s Eve dish called Hoppin’ John.
Grapes: In Spain, they pop a grape for each stroke of midnight or one for each month ahead. If one grape is bitter, watch out for that month!
Pork: Considered a lucky food because pigs move forward when they eat and are fat, which symbolizes prosperity.
Fish: It’s believed Fish served on NYE’s to be lucky: Their scales resemble coins invoking the idea of abundance.
Oranges: Oranges are a popular symbol of good luck. Oranges are also a bright, vibrant color that’s associated with good fortune.
Pomegranate: In Greek tradition, families toss a pomegranate against their front door when the clock strikes midnight on NYE. The more seeds that fall out, the more luck.
Lentils: Italians traditionally eat lentils on NYE. It’s said that Romans would gift a bag of legumes to turn into gold coins.
Have a wonderful New Years!
