Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) will add its 53rd nonstop flight on March 11, 2022 — Allegiant Airlines’ nonstop route to Appleton, Wisconsin. Residents looking to fly directly to Wisconsin won’t have to head toward Tampa or St. Pete as the nearest option for a flight!
SRQ Airport has grown exponentially since the start of COVID-19. It’s one of the fastest-growing in the country. As the area’s population increases and its popularity as a tourist destination grows, the airport sees 2021 as its busiest year ever — welcoming 2,219,303 passengers in the first nine months. In October, 275,359 passengers! According to CEO Rick Piccolo, “that number will reach “$3.1 million to $3.2 million” by December 31.
In addition to Allegiant, SRQ’s largest carrier, the airport added Southwest Airlines, which started year-round, nonstop service in February 2021 and now serves 19 destinations. Other airlines with direct flight routes include Avelo, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines. They upped the number of flights over the summer to accommodate travelers and buyers looking to move to the area (see SRQ nonstop destinations/airlines information.)
The airport plans to invest millions of dollars in its terminals and on-site facilities to accommodate the growth. The multimillion-dollar project will include an expansion of its terminal, several new restaurants, and improved operations for rental car companies and ground transportation.
