What better way to explore Sarasota than seeing nature close up. Try walking, running, or cycling in our beautiful tropical paradise. Sarasota has designed and constructed several trails and pedestrian-friendly roadways to help us safely enjoy our city. Here are three opportunities that offer variety in scenery and skill level.
1) Explore Sarasota by foot, bicycle on the Northern Extension to the Legacy Trail:
The newest segments of the Legacy Trail opened for public use on July 8. It’s an excellent way for cyclists and walkers to enjoy Sarasota’s beautiful flora and fauna along the way. The multi-use, paved trail stretches slightly north of Ashton Road to Proctor Road and ends on Bahia Vista Street. The original Legacy Trail opened in 2008 and occupies a former railway corridor once used by the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. It offers more than 10 miles of trail from the Venice Train Depot to Culverhouse Nature Park. LEGACY TRAIL MAP
2) The Bay Park’s Mangrove Walkway trail winds around the Van Wetzel Performing Arts Center and runs along Sarasota Bay. Lush bayou coastal landscaping and views of Sarasota Bay surround you on this pleasant half-mile-covered walkway. It’s a beautiful way to spend time in nature, whether you are walking, running, or enjoying local wildlife day or night (lighting for evening strolls and biking). 3) John Ringling Causeway has a wide lane designated for walkers and runners. Atop the 65-foot high bridge, you will take in the most spectacular views of the city skyline and the sparkling bay. Built in 2003 and named for the circus magnate, developer, and philanthropist, Ringling Causeway stretches 2.6 miles from Marina Plaza to St. Armands Circle. Plan about an hour of walking, a round trip, or more time if you stop in one of St. Armand’s eateries.
